5 Trends, Factors, and Advances Driving Satellite and Terrestrial Integration

For decades, satellite communications were primarily perceived as a backup or complementary option to traditional terrestrial networks or a last resort for those needing connectivity in far-flung, remote locations. Dramatic innovations and technological advancements continue to change perceptions and the relationship between space and terrestrial.

With increased frequency, mobile network operators and telecommunications companies around the world are turning to satellite to extend network reach, drive incremental commercial revenues, and satisfy the unrelenting demand for bandwidth, without having to invest copiously in network infrastructure expansions.

Here are 5 key reasons why satellite communications continue to emerge as a core component of the broader telecommunications ecosystem:

Bridging terrestrial and satellite networks was once a highly complex and technical undertaking. 2. Redefining Performance and Costs

Satellite communications once suffered from a perception of being expensive and slow, as compared to fiber and cable. Today, satellite bandwidth speeds have increased dramatically. Price per megabyte is competitive and, in many cases, comparable to traditional telco rates. Additionally, multi-orbit capabilities that combine the best attributes of MEO, LEO, and GEO constellations have enhanced reliability and reduced latency for time-sensitive applications.

3. Monetizing 5G Investments

Over the past decade, telecom companies around the world have cumulatively invested hundreds of billions in 5G infrastructure, spectrum, and technology.
