Bringing 5G Everywhere with the Ku-band Spectrum: How Satellites and Cellular Networks Are Joining Forces

Imagine being able to stream a movie, video chat with friends, or navigate using GPS, no matter where you are—even in the most remote areas. This vision is becoming a reality, thanks to a major breakthrough by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), the organization that sets global standards for mobile communication. In its June meeting in Shanghai, 3GPP approved the “Ku-band Work Project.” This achievement, spearheaded by Intelsat and supported by a consortium of 35 industry leaders, signals a pivotal step towards integrating satellite and terrestrial networks into one cohesive 5G ecosystem. 

The 3GPP Standardization Milestone 

3GPP’s endorsement of the “Ku-band Work Project” is not just a technical achievement but a two-year campaign that is resulting in a strategic leap toward harmonizing satellite and terrestrial 5G networks. The Ku-band, traditionally used for satellite communications, is now set to play a major role in enhancing 5G networks. This means better connectivity and faster speeds, even in places where traditional cell towers can’t reach. 

Bruno Fromont, CTO at Intelsat, explained, “Achieving the approval of the Ku work item is a major milestone. We will continue to spearhead the significant effort required to specify and standardize Ku-band use cases and conduct all applicable coexistence configurations.”  

Closing the Connectivity Gap 

Currently, 5G networks mostly rely on ground-based towers and infrastructure. This generally works well in cities and densely populated areas but falls short in remote or rural locations. By bringing satellites into the mix, we can extend the reach of 5G networks to places where building traditional infrastructure is challenging or impossible. The integration of satellite and terrestrial networks will revolutionize connectivity by enabling users to maintain consistent communication capabilities regardless of their location, enhancing user experiences and expanding service coverage.

A Vision for the Future 

Currently, the 5G network is like a highway system that only covers the cities. By integrating satellites, we’re building bridges and roads to every corner of the country, ensuring that everyone has access to the same level of connectivity. This is especially important for things like emergency services, remote education, and connecting devices that help manage everything from agriculture to logistics. 

The successful approval of the “Ku-band Work Package” is just the beginning. The next phase involves a comprehensive effort to specify and standardize Ku-band use cases, conduct coexistence configurations, and ultimately achieve full certification for Ku-band-based 5G NR (new radio) services. This process, targeted for completion by the end of 2025, is key to realizing a future where satellite and terrestrial networks operate in harmony to deliver unparalleled connectivity. 

The collaborative effort by Intelsat, satellite operators, terrestrial vendors, and mobile network operators underscores a shared vision of advancing global connectivity. By bridging the gap between satellite and cellular networks, this initiative promises to unlock new opportunities for service providers and enhance the connectivity experience for users around the world. As the industry moves forward with this vision, the convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks will undoubtedly shape the future of global communications, driving innovation and connectivity to new heights.
