Enhancing 5G with Ku-band: 5 Insights from Industry Experts 

In case you missed The Satellite World Briefing podcast’s latest episode, “How Incorporating Ku-band into 5G Standards Will Enhance MNO Value Delivery,” host Lucas Hunsicker was joined by Gerry Collins, Director of Product Management, Networks and Mobility at Intelsat and explored a groundbreaking achievement: the integration of Ku-band frequencies into 5G standards. Among the benefits of this advancement, it will help mobile network operators (MNOs) to deliver dependable connectivity in areas previously out of reach for terrestrial networks, including rural and disaster-prone zones. Here, we break down how Ku-band integration in 5G is revolutionizing connectivity and expanding mobile network capabilities in challenging environments.

  1. What is a Ku-band? The Ku-band is a range of the electromagnetic spectrum that satellites have used for many years. Adding it into the 5G framework significantly expands the satellite spectrum that’s available, enabling mobile network operators (MNOs) to offer more connectivity options and higher data rates in remote areas.  
  1. In locations without fiber or terrestrial infrastructure, the integration of Ku-band is especially advantageous for expanding network reach and providing higher data rates. Collins pointed out that Intelsat currently uses satellite backhaul to link more than 15,000 cell towers worldwide, which is essential for maintaining connectivity in remote or underserved areas.

The transition to a “multi-orbit world” will enable tailored connectivity by utilizing satellites operating in different orbits, including low Earth orbit (closer to Earth), medium Earth orbit, and geostationary orbit.  To ensure flexibility based on user needs, for example, low-latency applications can use satellites closer to Earth, while applications where a persistent, reliable connection is required might rely on a geostationary satellite. We envision a day when satellite services meet the requirements of the end user by accessing the right orbit at the right time for a better and more cost-effective customer experience. This is complementary to 5G Ku band integration, as end customers will benefit from multi-orbit capabilities when leveraging satellite services.

Real-World Applications: Ku-enabled 5G promises smoother transitions between satellite and terrestrial networks, allowing for uninterrupted connectivity in rural areas, on airplanes, and on ships. One prime example is vehicle communications. As vehicles or farm equipment drive outside of their 4G or 5G coverage areas, for example, they could switch between networks with ease, helping tremendously in industries like agriculture.

MNO’s Competitive Advantage: The integration of Ku-band into 5G standards and the vision of a 5G non terrestrial network will give the mobile user access to broadband services outside of today’s existing terrestrial coverage areas. By bringing the satellite and telecom worlds closer from a technology standpoint, the MNOs will preserve customer relationships across the various networking technologies, while at the same time benefiting from standardized systems versus the complex proprietary ones that exist today.   

Ku-band integration is fostering a new era in telecommunications, where the cellular and satellite industries converge to provide seamless, universal connectivity. The world is becoming more interconnected as MNOs are in a position to expand their services into non-terrestrial areas.  As Collins put it, 

“The future is that these industries will now start to become a lot closer together. The networks will be much more integrated, and the services we offer will just seem as though it’s the same service.”
