Golden Dome Missile Shield: What You Need to Know

Mission Brief, a new email series from Space News, explains the Golden Dome missile defense initiative’s history, technology, finances, and mission imperative. In the first part of the series, it sets the foundational context for what is positioned to become one of the largest defense systems in U.S. history. 

The initiative was introduced in January 2025 through an executive order and described as a next-gen missile defense shield modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome, which uses radar and interceptors to intercept artillery, drones, and short-range missiles. Because “Iron Dome” is a registered trademark of Israeli defense firm Rafael Advanced Defense systems, the program was later renamed Golden Dome.  

Why Now? 

In May 2025, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) released a map showing missile trajectories toward the U.S. from multiple nations as well as threats from mobile platforms like ships, submarines, and aircraft that could strike from closer range. The DIA noted that several of these systems have nuclear-capable variants. 

The takeaway is that the U.S. needs to prepare for increasingly sophisticated and large-scale advanced threats.  

Growing threats from space-based systems such as anti-satellite technology, drone swarms, hypersonic weapons, and advanced cruise missiles have been noted by officials and analysts. According to the DIA, some new missile delivery systems could exploit weaknesses in current U.S. defenses.   

How Will It Look? 

According to SpaceNews, Golden Dome will rely heavily on space-based defense, including satellites to detect launches and space-based interceptors to neutralize threats. Advanced communication systems and additional layers of sensors from maritime and terrestrial platforms will be included.  

The initiative represents a return to space-based defense ideas that date back to Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative. Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein, Vice Chief of Space Operations will lead the project noting the scale of coordinated required across government and industry.  

The resources, partnerships, and development timelines required to take Golden Dome from concept to operational reality are the main focuses in part two of the Mission Brief, which follows the strategic rationale established in part one. 

Building Golden Dome 

Congress has approved $25 billion in initial spending under the most recent defense reconciliation bill, with nearly $20 billion set aside for specific components such as boost-phase interceptors ($5.6 billion), space-based sensors ($7.2 billion), and missile-tracking satellites ($2 billion). The Space Force’s FY26 budget has been increased to $29 billion, with Golden Dome listed as a major priority.  

Defense contractors and commercial space businesses are actively preparing to participation. 

Gen. Guetlein has 60 days to deliver a concrete system design.  With an estimated cost of $175 billion and a three-year buildout goal, the program is expected to be one of the largest procurement efforts in U.S. history. 

Golden Dome may be a “system of systems,” requiring integration across multiple platforms, and development is progressing.
