From January 18 to 21, the Pacific Telecommunications Conference 2026 (PTC’26) convened global leaders in Honolulu, Hawaii, reinforcing its position as one of the leading forums for the digital infrastructure and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) ecosystem. The event brought together senior executives, policymakers, and innovators spanning data centers, telecommunications, cloud, AI, energy, and high-performance computing. Discussions centered on the convergence of digital infrastructure, telecommunications, and ICT, examining how networks, platforms, and policy frameworks must evolve to support the next stage of global connectivity as demand for scalable and resilient services continues to rise.
Across the conference, discussions highlighted the growing integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, with a focus on emerging network architectures, subsea infrastructure, and satellite innovation. As organizations look to expand coverage in new and underserved markets while unlocking new revenue opportunities, this convergence pointed to a broader industry shift toward multi-orbit strategies and closer collaboration with mobile network operators (MNOs). These themes came into sharper focus during a presentation by Nigel Stitt, SES Senior Sales Director for APAC, which explored how multi-orbit approaches can be applied in practice through partnership-driven models.
Building on the topics that dominated discussions at PTC’26, Stitt’s presentation offered a realistic perspective on the evolution of satellite connectivity. Rather than framing the rise of new constellations as a zero-sum disruption, he positioned the industry at a turning point shaped by orbit diversification, cloud-native architectures, universal standards, and the growing influence of AI. Together, these forces are redefining the capabilities of satellite networks and how they integrate with terrestrial infrastructure.
Central to his message was the case for multi-orbit architectures as a strategic response to increasingly complex connectivity demands. He emphasized that no single orbit is universally optimal, outlining the distinct advantages of GEO, MEO, and LEO satellites. LEO provides low-latency performance for real-time and mobility-driven use cases; MEO balances latency and throughput for mission-critical services, and GEO remains well suited for broad coverage and broadcast efficiency. A multi-orbit approach allows operators to combine these capabilities into a single, seamless service, improving resilience, performance, and customer experience while avoiding the limitations of a one-orbit strategy.
Stitt also emphasized the importance of partnerships, especially with MNOs, as the industry adapts to this evolving landscape. Acknowledging the competitive pressures introduced by high-profile LEO entrants, he underscored the value of remaining aligned with MNOs as collaborators. Multi-orbit capabilities can help MNOs extend coverage, improve network redundancy, and create differentiated offerings across enterprise, government, and mobility markets when deployed through partnership-driven models. From his perspective, multi-orbit represents not only a technical evolution but a commercial one, creating new revenue opportunities through targeted, use-case-driven solutions.
His presentation ultimately converged on enterprise demand and the realities of network reliability. Stitt highlighted research showing that even brief outages can have immediate operational impact, underscoring a gap in confidence around backup connectivity. This gap represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Increasingly integrated, multi-orbit, cloud and 5G-enabled architectures are becoming the cornerstone of the network of the future, designed to meet rising expectations for scalability, performance, and availability.
Altogether, Stitt’s presentation reflected a recurring theme of PTC’26: the future of connectivity will be defined less by individual technologies and more by how they are effectively combined. As he concluded, “The future isn’t single-orbit. It’s multi-orbit, and it’s happening now.” As digital infrastructure continues to converge, multi-orbit strategies and ecosystem partnerships are becoming critical enablers of the next phase of global connectivity.
