Satellite and Cellular Convergence: 10 Key Insights from Top Satcom Experts

In the realm of telecommunications, satellite and cellular convergence stands at a pivotal moment in the evolution of connectivity, marking not just a technological advancement, but a revolutionary leap forward. This integration, rooted in the 3GPP 5G standardization, is poised to redefine how we connect and communicate globally. A recent report projects satellite solutions to account for 40 percent of the growth in telco enterprise connectivity between now and 2027, or a $32.5 billion opportunity. While the question of whether the effort will be worth the market opportunity looms large, the potential rewards are equally significant, with the combining of space and mobile technologies poised to unlock new markets and drive innovation at a scale previously unseen.  

As the industry charts this new course, collaboration, innovation, and a focus on bridging connectivity gaps are paramount. In a recent panel discussion hosted by Antonio Franchi, Head of Space for 5G and 6G Strategic Programme, European Space Agency (ESA), several internationally renowned Satcom players from both the satellite network operator ecosystem and the mobile network operator ecosystem, including Bruno Fromont, Chief Technology Officer, Intelsat, came together to discuss satellite and cellular convergence. 1. Standardization: The Backbone of Seamless Integration 

At the core of the discussion was the critical importance of standardization. Panelists emphasized the need for standardized approaches to ensure seamless integration of satellite and cellular technologies into the 5G ecosystem. Whether it’s satellite or cellular, the end-user experience should be consistent and reliable. The convergence of these networks aims to provide just that – a unified experience where users don’t need to discern between different types of networks.  

2. Collaboration for Innovation 

Throughout the dialogue, the importance of collaboration emerged as a recurring theme. Industry partnerships are crucial for driving innovation and standardization in satellite technology. Faisal Zai, Telco Edge Operator Platform Lead at GSMA, said, “You look at the list of partners there. And it really is an ecosystem effort, in particular, to drive it and this is just the beginning. There’s so many more players, so many more opportunities that we need to add into the mix.” 

3. Chipset Integration and 5G Demands 

Chipset integration has many intricacies, but it plays a pivotal role in meeting the demands of 5G technology. Jaume Sanpera, CEO of Sateliot, declared that “success will be when all the devices are prepared to connect to both terrestrial and non-terrestrial. If we if we have chipsets that only work with terrestrial or non-terrestrial, then we’ll be exactly the same that we were before, we’ll have different devices for different aspects.” The development of 5G waveform technology compatible with existing satellites emerged as a crucial action item, promising to propel the convergence of satellite and cellular networks forward. Fromont explained that there are different ways to address a 5G waveform in a terminal, but to get the “ultimate low-cost terminal, you need a chipset.” This focus on affordability is crucial for reaching underserved regions and bridging the digital divide. 

4. Bridging the Digital Divide 

One of the most pressing challenges in telecommunications is bridging the digital divide. With significant portions of the world still lacking adequate communication infrastructure, satellite and cellular convergence presents an opportunity to extend coverage to underserved regions. This not only fosters economic development but also facilitates access to essential services and information.  

5. The Promise of Global Connectivity 

At the heart of satellite and cellular convergence and bridging the digital divide lies the promise of global connectivity. Jennifer Manner, Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, at EchoStar, emphasized the “need to have sufficient spectrum available, which means we need harmonized global spectrum that’s available to support this effort.” By integrating 5G, satellite, and other technologies, providers aim to deliver seamless connectivity to users worldwide. The deployment of 5G base stations in space and the launch of 5G satellite services mark significant milestones in this journey towards universal connectivity. As an example, Fromont discussed the upcoming launch of Intelsat’s new GEO satellites that will allow them to offer 5G services from a commercial launch perspective, further expanding the reach of connectivity. The project is set to launch two next-generation software-defined satellites into orbit by 2025, joining two previously announced Airbus-constructed software-defined satellites.

Regulatory challenges pose significant hurdles to the integration of satellite and cellular technologies. Speakers advocated for regulatory changes to accommodate the use of satellite spectrum in next-generation wireless communications, underscoring the importance of public interest obligations. This includes discussions around direct-to-device communication and participation in regulatory forums to influence policy decisions.

The intersection of satellite and cellular networks not only revolutionizes connectivity but also unlocks new horizons in various sectors. From precision agriculture and real-time energy monitoring to the proliferation of IoT applications, the possibilities are endless. As the convergence of satellite and cellular networks unfolds, business models are undergoing a profound transformation. From revenue sharing to hybrid networks, providers are exploring innovative approaches to ensure affordability and accessibility for all. Such models facilitate quicker access to wider markets, crucial for amortizing the costs associated with launching satellite constellations. Zai highlighted the industry’s commitment to driving sustainable growth through its focus on hybrid networks and cost-effective distribution. 

9. Monetization Strategies for Operators 

Looking ahead, monetization strategies for operators will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of connectivity. Speakers emphasized the need for collaboration and innovation in unlocking the full economic potential of 6G technology. Despite challenges, the consensus remains optimistic about the multi-billion-dollar market awaiting those who dare to pioneer the next frontier of telecommunications.

Developments in software-defined technologies, multi-orbit arbitration, and regenerative payloads promise to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of 5G services delivered via satellite.
