The Evolution of Satellite Internet in Global Connectivity  

Over the past few years, the satellite internet market has grown significantly, evolving from a niche connectivity option into an essential component of the global broadband ecosystem. In 2025, the market was valued at approximately 4.12 billion USD and is forecast to grow to 4.68 billion in 2026. This growth reflects satellite broadband’s expanding reach across enterprise networking, government communications, mobility, rural connectivity, and network resilience applications. 

Residential satellite broadband adoption continued to rise in 2025, driven by the rapid expansion of LEO services. These systems offer improved throughput and lower latency compared to traditional GEO systems. As performance has improved, satellite internet has become increasingly competitive with terrestrial broadband for certain consumer or enterprise use cases. 

Key Trends Shaping Satellite Internet 

Expansion of LEO Constellations 

One of the most significant trends shaping the market is the continued growth of LEO constellations. Operating closer to Earth, LEO satellites support real-time applications, mobility platforms, and cloud-based services. The number of LEO satellites is predicted to grow from 3,700 to 5,100 by 2030, highlighting the strong momentum behind ongoing deployments. 

Convergence of Satellite and Terrestrial Networks 

Satellite internet is increasingly being integrated with terrestrial infrastructure rather than positioned as a stand-alone alternative. Providers are deploying hybrid architectures that combine satellite connectivity with fiber and cellular networks to improve coverage, resilience, and service continuity. In addition to strengthening network redundancy during outages or emergencies, this convergence supports seamless connectivity in urban, rural, and remote areas. 

Direct-to-Device (D2D) Connectivity 

Another major trend is the emergence of D2D connectivity. D2D allows smartphones and IoT devices to connect directly to satellites for basic data and messaging services instead of relying on specialized terminals. D2D is becoming viewed as a fundamental capability for emergency communications, coverage extension, and future integration with terrestrial mobile networks, even though it is still in its early stages of deployment. When integrated with non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), D2D strengthens network resilience and positions satellite internet as a complementary layer within global broadband infrastructure.  

Growth of Multi-Orbit Architectures 

Operators are adopting multi-orbit strategies that combine GEO, MEO, and LEO in addition to service-level innovation. This approach allows providers to balance latency, capacity, coverage, and reliability based on specific mission needs. Multi-orbit architectures are especially important for enterprise, aviation, maritime, and government users that operate across diverse geographies and require consistent performance. With a network that combines GEO, MEO, and LEO satellites, SES is a prime example of this trend. SES can deliver flexible and resilient connectivity tailored to different requirements, such as high-throughput data delivery for enterprise and government or low-latency communications for mobile platforms, by leveraging multiple orbits.

Satellite internet is evolving into a flexible, multi-layered ecosystem rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, and multi-orbit strategies are likely to become more and more important in this ecosystem.
