The broadcast industry is at a turning point. Spending on content reached $247 billion globally, yet that content needs to travel across more platforms, partners, and regions than ever before. In the March/April 2026 issue of Euromedia, Jon Sonsteby, VP of North America Sales at SES, described how broadcasters must contend with fragmented audiences, pressure to reallocate spectrum, and growing consumer expectations for seamless, multi-device access. Owning and operating proprietary distribution infrastructure is an outdated strategy that is no longer sustainable.
Enter hybrid distribution. It’s actively reshaping how content moves, and it’s not a concept for the future.
Why Hybrid Models Make Economic Sense
The flexibility and scalability of IP-based networks are combined with the unmatched reach and reliability of satellites in hybrid models. The practical advantage for broadcasters is clear: they can outsource operational complexity while maintaining efficiency and scale. Instead of managing RF uplinks and coordinating multi-vendor systems, companies shift their attention to what drives growth: content creation, platform strategy, and direct-to-consumer monetization.
Real-world examples show this in action. The C-band to Ku-band transition in North America demonstrates this approach: SES’s proposed Ku+ solution uses C-band uplinks cross-strapped to Ku-band downlink transponders, preserving existing ground infrastructure while successfully migrating to a new spectrum. During weather disruptions, a standards-based terrestrial recovery network offers backup, ensuring seamless delivery without costly redesigns.
Similar hybrid orchestration, where broadcasters combine satellite, terrestrial, and IP delivery from a single interface, is showcased by major sporting events and emerging Latin American markets.
The Reality: No Single Technology Wins
As Sonsteby noted, “No single technology can meet every requirement on its own. Instead, the most effective networks combine the strengths of multiple technologies to create flexible, scalable systems capable of supporting evolving audience demands.” It’s not theoretical. Broadcasters already managing multiple technologies recognize this truth: hybrid technology isn’t the future. It’s the operating standard.
The Real Tradeoffs
Careful orchestration is necessary for hybrid distribution. Layered resilience systems are required because Ku-band signals are more vulnerable to weather attenuation than C-band signals. Initially, having multiple delivery paths results in more complexity rather than less. And outsourcing distribution doesn’t eliminate the need for technical expertise; it redirects it.
Moreover, this shift assumes the broadcasters can rely on third-party operators with mission-critical infrastructure. That requires strong partnerships and clear SLAs around reliability and support.

Hybrid distribution isn’t the industry’s next chapter. It’s the current one. The winners are those orchestrating satellite, terrestrial, and IP networks as a cohesive ecosystem, balancing flexibility and efficiency as audience behavior continues to evolve.
