World Wi-Fi Day and The Road to Seamless Connectivity

Every June 20th, the world pauses to mark something most people never think about until it goes down: Wi-Fi. The Wireless Broadband Alliance established World Wi-Fi Day in 2016 to commemorate the subtle ways that wireless connectivity has transformed everyday life and to work towards a critical global goal: closing the digital divide that still leaves billions offline.

The history of Wi-Fi starts with a standard rather than a single inventor. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers approved 802.11 in 1997, a wireless protocol that moved data at a then-respectable 2 megabits per second, which was clunky and largely ignored by consumers. The Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (now known as the Wi-Fi Alliance) was established by a coalition of tech companies two years later. They hired a branding firm to find a catchier name than “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence.” The result, Wi-Fi, was chosen because it sounded enough like “hi-fi” to be recognizable; it was not an acronym at all. The public got their first taste of untethered internet later that year with the release of Apple’s iBook and Airport base station. The rest is the architecture of modern life, which consists of homes, offices, airports, and coffee shops that are all connected by invisible radio waves.

That connectivity quickly spread to the air, beginning with a much less glamorous origin story. Sitting in a Texas barbecue restaurant in 1991, Gogo Founder Jimmy Ray sketched an idea on a paper napkin: an affordable telephone system for private aircraft. That napkin turned into Aircell, a company that dedicated more than 20 years to solving a deceptively simple problem: how to keep a signal locked onto a moving plane. After securing an exclusive FCC spectrum license for air-to-ground communications in 2006, the company launched its Commercial Aviation division as Gogo, introducing internet access to a commercial flight for the first time two years later.

What started as an analog phone network has since become a deeply layered, redundant system, evolving from a breakthrough idea into the foundation of today’s inflight connectivity ecosystem. Although Gogo Commercial Aviation is often associated with inflight connectivity, it was one of the original trailblazers that set the industry in motion. That pioneering business was later acquired by Intelsat, which has since merged with SES, bringing the same spirit of innovation into a new era of global connectivity. Today, the company’s aviation network is not only anchored in decades-long institutional knowledge and technical experience, but continues to build on that legacy.

The evolution of inflight connectivity illustrates a broader reality about Wi-Fi itself: innovation never stops. What began as a bold idea scribbled on a napkin has grown into a platform for continuous reinvention, as demand for high performance connectivity continues to grow. The power of multi-orbit connectivity is taking that original vision to heights few could have imagined, enabling networks to dynamically switch bands and orbits to keep a flight securely connected no matter where it goes across the globe. SES is carrying that trailblazing legacy forward, transforming early innovation into a standard for seamless global coverage. The complexity is the point: delivering a true, seamless connectivity experience to a seat 35,000 feet over an open ocean is completely different than getting a signal to a laptop at a desk.

The goal of World Wi-Fi Day has always been to connect the unconnected, and that story is still being written today, not just in homes and offices, but 35,000 feet in the air. From a napkin sketch to today’s multi-orbit satellite networks, the mission has never changed: making the invisible thread of connectivity reach a little farther, for more people, every year.
