Access to quality education remains a persistent challenge for numerous high school students residing in Africa’s remote communities. Many remote areas lack basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and internet connectivity, making it difficult to establish and maintain educational facilities. This hurdle poses a barrier to attaining self-sustaining employment and learning opportunities across the continent.
In response to this pressing issue, South Africa’s Stellenbosch University has undertaken a collaborative effort to bridge the education gap and ensure equal access to learning for all African high school students. Over the past decade, the university has collaborated with Intelsat, a leading satellite communications company, to expand the availability of learning beyond the country’s borders and make this vision a reality.
Through satellite internet services, schools in remote communities can access online educational resources, participate in distance learning programs, and communicate with educators and students in other regions.
Harnessing satellite solutions, Stellenbosch University has successfully engaged learners across Africa, delivering live lessons and presentations broadcasted from the university’s professional studios. Regardless of location, students can participate in classes, interact with educators in real time, and access recorded content.
Zainab Suliman, Deputy Director at Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Learning Technologies, emphasizes the cost-effectiveness and significant impact of satellite solutions, coupled with the proactive involvement of a team of experts. Suliman envisions that this constructive collaboration will empower the university to further expand its educational service offerings and dismantle barriers for all African students.
