The Defense Strategies Institute (DSI) Group hosted its 8th annual SmallSat & Space Access Summit, an important event that brought together key stakeholders from the Department of Defense (DoD), Federal Government, and industry for in depth discussions on advancements in space access and small satellite projects for the government and commercial sectors. The summit addressed vital topics from enhancing space-based capabilities and access to fostering innovation in SmallSat technology. Below are standout insights from speakers who shared forward-looking perspectives on how SmallSat is transforming defense strategy.
- Dr. Bryan Dorland, Principal Director for Space Technology at the OUSD(R&E) shared that the DoD is looking ahead over the next 10-15 years to redefine how these smaller platforms can support strategic goals, highlighting “the evolving role of SmallSats in accelerating mission agility, ISR capability, and resilient space architectures.”
- Col. Aaron Stevenson, Deputy Director Commercial Space Office at Space Systems Command, who discussed the growing alignment between the military and the commercial space market emphasized how the Space Force is “aligning with commercial momentum” to stay ahead of rapid technological shifts in the SmallSat space. His message underscored a very clear goal: to leverage the innovation that is already thriving in the private sector and to strengthen integration with industry partners.
The 8th annual summit highlighted the revolutionary impact of SmallSat technologies on national defense and space strategy. Through insights from leaders like Dr. Dorland and Col. Stevenson, the summit emphasized a future defined by closer public-private collaboration, rapid innovation, and more agile resilient space capabilities.
