The satellite industry is set to undergo transformative changes this year. Intelsat’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mike DeMarco, shared his thoughts on the major space trends, challenges, and opportunities that will influence the industry in this coming year.
Industry’s Future
DeMarco highlighted the wave of large-scale GEO and LEO satellite deployments in multiple sectors beyond commercial aviation, as well as the momentum for multi-orbit service development. “We will see new connectivity in 2025 in the agriculture and heavy equipment sector, in addition to enterprise and network sectors,” he said.
End-User Markets to Keep an Eye On
DeMarco identified heavy equipment and agriculture as industries with room to grow in 2025. He highlighted Intelsat and Softbank’s continued collaboration, which aims to advance satellite-powered connectivity trials. “Looking ahead to 2025, the next phase of the Intelsat-SoftBank partnership will focus on accelerating the trials of satellite-powered connectivity into broader mobile network infrastructures.” The goal of this initiative is to refine the Ubiquitous Network by enhancing synchronization and interoperability between satellite and terrestrial systems.
Key Discussions at SATELLITE 2025
The convergence of new technologies, security threats, and connectivity solutions are the key topics DeMarco predicts will be discussed at the Satellite Show 2025. DeMarco stated, “Big topics include how satellite operators and partners are going to address the convergence of a changing world – with new technologies, threats, and opportunities. Into this big bucket of ‘change,’ I would throw the growth in the IoT ecosystem, cloud connectivity, 5G-enabled applications, AI, and ML.”
Multi-Orbit Expansion
Bringing up the challenge of connecting 3.5 billion unconnected people, the evolving global threat environment, and sustainability concerns, industry leaders stressed the importance of external investment in the satellite industry and the rise of multi-orbit systems that will transform the way satellite networks are deployed and managed.
