WSBW 2024 Preview: Key Discussions on the Future Transformation of the Satellite Industry

World Space Business Week (WSBW) is being held in Paris from September 16-20. WSBW, the leading global space industry event, brings together more than 1,600 stakeholders, including financiers, entrepreneurs, and top business executives. This conference is crucial for fostering networking opportunities, exchanging knowledge, tackling serious issues, and facilitating groundbreaking deals that will influence the space industry’s future.

Innovation Propels Tech Forward for Satellite

The success of SpaceX’s Starlink and its 6,000-satellite constellation has brought fierce competition and spurred innovation, introducing a major transformation in the satellite industry. Increased consolidation, vertical integration, and new partnerships among satellite operators have resulted in this change. To remain competitive, leaders like Intelsat and Eutelsat are stepping up their innovation efforts and are incorporating new technologies.

Intelsat’s CEO David Wajsgras, noted, “The influx of LEO providers and other “new space” industry entrants is bringing a great deal of awareness and excitement to the space industry overall. At Intelsat, we’ve expedited the pace of our innovation. We’re establishing key partnerships, launching new products, and advancing our software-defined 5G network, including virtualizing our ground and space assets.” Leaders in the industry believe that despite difficulties, traditional GEO satellites will continue to have a place alongside newly developed LEO systems.

The Increasing Integration of Satellite and Terrestrial Services

Due to the increasing number of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and rising data needs, there is a growing convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks. This convergence is accelerated by the increasing integration of satellite capabilities with the offerings of mobile network operators.

“MNOs and telcos are looking to us to help strengthen and expand their networks and enable new use cases for the value-added solutions that build on those network,” noted Wajsgras. To facilitate these advancements, standardization and the development of affordable, interoperable terminals continue to be important for seamless integration. Though experts acknowledge that full integration would take time, they expect the shift to 5G will further accelerate this convergence.
